Think Before You Speak

As students many of us will be eager to finish school and enter the workforce.  Many of us will be so excited at the offer of a first serious job that we may jump at the opportunity and may ignore some of the contract’s stipulations. Please be cautious though!  Although many employers don’t advertise that their employees forfeit the right to speak publicly about their jobs, there are many workplaces that do impose restrictions.  Recently, Canadian reporter, Kai Nagata quit his job as CTV’s Quebec city bureau chief partially because he had signed away his rights to speak publicly about his job. He now wanted his opinions back. So, remember to read the fine print in the contract before signing your rights away.  Once you have signed a contract, it will be extremely difficult to test the limits of what is acceptable to your employer and may result in your termination.
